Meet the climbers and students who are taking on the Summit for Hope Challenge...

Age: 60

Trekking Experience: Mount Kenya (2011), Kilimanjaro (2012) and Annapurna Base Camp (2014).

Born in the township of Soweto, I found myself in the heat of the 1976 student's uprising, losing a brother to the chaos of that day.

Education has always been a huge part of my life. With parents who were educators I found myself excelling at school through hard work and determination.

Half way through my Bachelor of Science degree I was forced into exile – where I trained and served in the ranks of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). Later while in Zambia I was given the opportunity to study towards my medical degree – a privilege that I took with both hands. Today, while I no longer practise as a medical doctor I am grateful for the stepping stone I was given. As CEO of Motheo Construction Group, South Africa's largest black female owned construction, civil and housing company in South Africa I proudly took on the opportunity to give back. With the partnership of Koos Van Ettinger I spearheaded the Dr. Thandi Ndlovu Children's Foundation, which today see's 20 students fulfilling the dreams towards a better future.

I climb this mountain Kilimanjaro for their hope and their future.

 

Moira Granny Seape

Age: 57

Trekking Experience: Many years of experience in trekking (in the military).

Granny Seape, an Economist by training holds a Bachelors of Economics degree (B.Econ) from the University of Zambia. She founded the 100 percent Black Woman Owned Ahanang Hardware and Construction in 1998. She is founder and Director of Global Foreign Exchange – a Financial Services company that is female majority Black owned. Before setting up Ahanang, Granny served as a Senior Manager in the credit Division of both ABSA and Nedbank after a stint at the World Bank in Washington where she had been attached to the Southern African Division as an intern.

In 1999 Granny was nominated Developer of the Year (National) and in 2000 The Institute of Housing of Southern Africa (IHSA) recognised Granny as Housing Person of the Year  –  this award is in recognition of persons who have made a difference in housing.

She serves on several Boards. A Colonel in the South African Airforce Reserves and serves on the South African Airforce Council.

I am a firm believer in the empowerment of young people, especially through education. As CEO of a construction company we have spared no effort in training young people and utilising them in the business to give them relevant on the job training.

 

Baby Tyawa Baby Tyawa

Penelope Baby Tyawa is a professionally registered Psychologist.

Trekking Experience: Hiked the Inca Trail, Cusco, Peru. Killimanjaro; Annapurna Base Camp; Cathedral Peak, Various Magaliesburg trails, Rustig, Suikerbosrand and Table Mountain gorge.

Career Focus: Public servant, Child and adolescent therapy, learning disabilities and learning challenges, career counselling, research.

Sectors Served: Public service Parliament of SA, communications and research, Education, Gambling (Trade and Industry).

Values & Principles: Promotion of peace & stability, integrity, accountability and transparency, knowledge and research.

Life vision & Social responsibility: Human development, encouraging self-reliance, focus and result driven, socio economic transformation and sharing knowledge with those who are willing to share.

Contribution to Knowledge and Transformation: Community work, published paper in the journal of gaming studies, Nevada University, presented at the summer conference on Learning and education on the Spetzes Island in Greece.

Shaka Sisulu Shaka Sisulu


Trekking Experience: It will be his 2nd Kilimanjaro climb, the first being for the Kiddie Camps in 2013.

Shaka Sisulu is a media entrepreneur, radio personality and philanthropist.

As a media entrepreneur, he heads a 6-time Alan Patton Award winning publishing company, a social media agency and a pan-African media tracking firm.

He hosts shows on 702, having also worked with Kaya FM for the past year. He is also a regular columnist with City Press, Destiny Man and Bona Magazines.

An Archbishop Tutu Fellow, he co-founded Cheesekids, an NGO that mobilised over 20,000 young people to volunteer in their communities.

He also serves on the board of LoveLife, Africa's largest HIV/AIDS youth prevention NGO, and sits on the advisory committee of the Public Sector Excellence Awards.

He read for a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Administration at GIBS in 2004.


Khomotso Khomotso

Age: 49

Khomotšo is a Human Resources Executive at one of the leading Medical Aid Companies in South Africa, Resolution Health Medical Scheme. A high-performing and talented professional, Khomotšo is a strategic thinker who executes strategies in line with core business needs, resulting in a unique, innovative and results-driven approach to the management and maximization of human capital.
 
Whilst creating a structured environment or rebuilding a negative work space, Khomotšo is able to understand people and excel in empowering and building capabilities in people and management through the development and implementation of effective and realistic strategies. As a problem solver and a key change agent, she provides successful solutions through an all-encompassing management approach.
 
As an inventive and pioneering individual, who welcomes challenges in a humble manner, Khomotšo is a general management expert, specialising in human resources. Although having a wealth of cross-functional experience, she has a passion for her chosen speciality. She continually strives to achieve best practice whilst identifying, creating and implementing strategy through the mentoring, coaching and motivation of human capital.
 
Her extensive experience accounts for a unique skill-set and the business acumen of a modern visionary. She has delivered on organisational objectives in various arenas demanding buy-in and focus readjustment, whilst being recognised as a leader in her field focusing on the common goal of organisational development.

She is familiar with policy development and the analysis thereof for application in daily practice. Kgabo Mashalane Kgabo Mashalane

Age: 27

I am a South African attorney, global citizen and adventure enthusiast. I have a passion for giving and paying it forward in the hope that my modest effort will give somebody hope. It will be my first time on Mount Kilimanjaro and I'm ecstatic for the journey ahead!

Age: 60

Trekking Experience: Base Camp Everest (2009), Mount Kenya (2011), Kilimanjaro (1999 and again in 2012), Annapurna Base Camp (2014)

 

Nomvula Jordt Nomvula Jordt

Nomvula Hazel Jordt, mother of three and grandmother of two, lives in Eldorado Park with her husband. She matriculated from Orlando High School and went on to achieve a diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (Natalspruit Hospital) B Curr Degree in Nursing (RAU). Nomvula has 30 years experience in the public and private healthcare services as a professional nurse.

Nomvula established and manages Nomha Health Services since 2012. The company provides communities and corporates with specialised medical care in the following areas: TB, Diabetes, Blood pressure and HCT.

One of Nomvula's passions is to assist and guide talented young people and especially those with leadership qualities in acquiring tertiary qualifications so that they play meaningful roles in society.

 

Armand Eksteen Armand Eksteen

Age: 27

Trekking Experience: Local hikes on a lot of different mountain ranges in South Africa, especially the Drakensburg

I am the Quality Manager at Mutual Austen Safe and Security; I have a passion for helping people so this Summit of Hope makes me very excited. Trekking for a purpose beyond yourself.

 

  Ms Metsi Makhetha

Age: 49yrs

Trekking Experience: 1st in 1984 - Colorado; as part of a mountaineering club when I was student (in the US/California) and now looking forward to another first on the continent.

I work for the United Nation’s largest development agency – the UN Development Program, currently based in Guinea/Conakry, as the Country Director. Most recently, at the height of the Ebola Health Emergency, I was seconded to the UN Mission for the Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER), to serve as the Director of Essential Services (October 2014 – end April, 2015), and part of a Crisis Response Team established to help countries manage the health emergency. Fluent in two of the UN official languages, French and English, I have been working for the United Nations; serving in various Advisory and leadership positions, for the past 19years.

In addition to the numerous international assignments on the African continent and in Asia, I had the honor and privilege to serve in my own country, South Africa, during the transition period, as one of a three member team seconded by the UN (UN-Habitat and DBSA), to help translate the housing policy framework into a transformational, partnership based and people centered process. I am also, a board member of ResourceAfrica, a not for profit entity that aims to empower communities through the promotion of sustainable conservation approaches, ensuring responsible management of Africa’s rich fauna and flora economies and that dividends are equitably shared with communities.

Truth is, I am an adventure junkie and taking on Kilimanjaro is yet another opportunity for me to step up my personal leadership and stretch my boundaries (physical and mental).

As a proudly South African global citizen, committed to impacting and rewriting the future of South Africa and the African continent, through investing in Education, and developing committed leaders (at all levels of society), what better way than to be a part of the “Summit for Hope” challenge.

 

Gina Munro Gina Munro

Age: 25

Trekking Experience: I’ve climbed mountains in all of South Africa’s provinces and looking forward to something as great as Kilimanjaro.

I work at a company called Bureau Veritas as well as freelance for BMW Driving Experience as an instructor. I love my Creator and anything with adventure.

 

  Godfrey Chaane

Mr. Godfrey Thamaga Chaane matriculated at Malatse – Motsepe High School in Mmakau (1984) and obtained a BSc (Education) from the then University of Bophuthatswana. He then pursued a Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying with the University of the Witwatersrand which he completed in 1996.

As a Quantity Surveyor, Mr. Chaane worked for C P De Leeuw Quantity Surveyors in Johannesburg, Department of Public Works (North West Province) and the Central District Municipality in Mafikeng. After completing his Masters Degree in Project Management with the University of Pretoria in 2000 and registering as a Professional Quantity Surveyor, Mr. Chaane started his private practice in Quantity Surveying and Project Management (which commenced business in January 2001). He is registered with the SACQSP as a Professional Quantity Surveyor and is also registered with the SACPCMP as a Professional Construction Project Manager (Pr.CPM).

Mr. Chaane is the past President of The South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession and a past council member for the Council of the Built Environment (CBE). He is a member of  the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS) and the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (PMAQS).

Mr. Chaane has participated in projects ranging from R0.6m to R1.2b. He is technically experienced in both the field of Quantity Surveying, Project Management and general construction.

 

Kopano Badimo Climbing for Jan Kopano Badimo

Age: 26

Trekking experience: first time (enthusiastic) trekker.

I'm one of the Directors of "Global Citizen Millennium holdings", a new company that aims to promote environmentally sustainable projects in agriculture, energy production, and water use and waste management. I'm also currently pursuing my studies in Waste Management.

Making a difference, however small enriches me to live a purposeful life. I dare myself to try new ventures beyond my comfort zone, from eating unusual delicacies to jumping off a cliff… I dare to live! Taking on mount Kili is going be a rewarding adventure. Even better, an adventure for hope.

I believe that we can change our nation through the vehicle of education. I ‘m involved in co-ordinating the Dr. Thandi Ndlovu Children’s Foundation, as well as lead the LOVE One, Educate a Child, Change a Nation Campaign.
